RESEARCH EXPERIENCE:

I. Field Research:

A) During Medical School, as part of Hygiene and Public Health work, field surveys were done on immunization status of pregnant females and children, smoking habits among medical students and vaccination during cholera epidemic.
B) During MPH at Yale University, a field research was done on “Effectiveness of Methadone Rehabilitation Programs”, a multi center study involving New Haven, Bridgeport, Stamford and Hartford Rehab Center.

II. Laboratory Research:

A) During MPH at Yale University, my involvement in some basic molecular biology and immunology research with Professor Curtis L. Patton gave me a new insight and interest in research. The project was about characterization and isolation of surface antigens of plasmodium falciparum and production of polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies to produce vaccine against malaria.
This gave me an initial exposure of basic lab techniques including cell cultures, SDS gel electrophoresis, autoradiography, somatic cell hybridization, immunoassay, etc.
B) As PGY-3 in Urology, a year of basic research was spent on two projects:
1) Immunology of bladder cancer. Attempt was made to characterize and identify surface antigens, expressed only by VARIOUS grades of Transitional Cell Carcinoma of Bladder (TCCB) and not by normal Urothelium and other normal and malignant cells. A 205Kd protein was identified as a common antigen and monoclonal antibodies were produced against it. This project was in collaboration with Dr. D.K. Chopin at Henri Mondor Hospital, Creteil, France, and supported by a grant from Union Internationale Contra la Cancer (UICC), Geneva, Switzerland.
2. Testicular Ischemia and Reperfusion Injury; Effects of heparin, oxypurinol and PEG-SOD: Testicular ischemia followed by reperfusion (experimental model of torsion) were studied in Sprague Daweley Rat model. It was found that chemicals that block super oxide radicals are useful in prevention of reperfusion injury.
C) As junior faculty at Texas Tech university, a novel idea of using intestinal mucosa as a dialysis membrane on the same principles as peritoneal dialysis was tested in a pig model in collaboration with Dr. G. Tom Shires which were later presented at American College of Surgeons and American Urological Association. Ileum was the most suitable part of intestine for the construction of a continent pouch.
